The NFL’s CTE settlement with former players is not the end of this story, but a chance for both sides to take responsibility and show change. Joe Burrow, according to Boomer Esiason, will be the greatest quarterback in the NFL in five years, according to the CBS pregame program this week. This may come out as too hopeful. But, as probably the finest quarterback in organization history, Esiason knows a thing or two about Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks.
Until 2026, no one will know whether Esiason is correct. For the time being, all we know is that in 2021, Burrow will accomplish things that Cincinnati fans haven’t seen since 1988.
Joe Burrow is finally giving Bengals supporters reason to be optimistic.
“The Cincinnati Bengals pick, Joe Burrow, quarterback, LSU,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell from the virtual “platform” in his basement on April 23, 2020.
Bengals supporters were in heaven for the next seven months. For the first time in decades, the new quarterback gave the organization actual optimism. He also provided data to back up his optimism. With a 65.3 percent completion percentage, 13 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, the rookie passed for 2,688 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Then, precisely seven months after Burrow was picked by the organization, the unimaginable occurred. Burrow tore his left ACL and MCL, as well as a portion of his PCL and meniscus, in a severe knee injury.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback made a strong comeback in the summer and was ready to play in Week 1 of 2021. That was fantastic news for Bengals supporters, but it was terrible news for the rest of the league.
Burrow’s second season is already better than his first after seven games. He has passed for 1,596 yards, 17 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while completing 68.9% of his throws. He also leads the league with 13.4 yards per completion.
Most significantly, although Burrow’s Bengals were 2-7-1 in the 10 games he started last season, they are 5-2 and tied for first place in the AFC North this season.
Burrow’s performance, along with the emergence of rookie wide receiver (and Burrow’s college classmate) Ja’Marr Chase and the Cincy defense’s great play, gives Bengals supporters optimism that the club may return to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
If it occurs, the Queen City’s hope levels will skyrocket. Then, for the first time since 1988, supporters may dream of the club making the Super Bowl.

Burrow, who is just over a month away from turning 24, is unquestionably one of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL.
The year 2021, on the other hand, is a great period for young quarterbacks in the NFL. As icons like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers retire, a new generation of quarterbacks will take their place. The current list of starting quarterbacks under the age of 26 is astounding. Patrick Mahomes (26), Baker Mayfield (26), Josh Allen (25), Lamar Jackson (24), Brandon Burrow (24), Kyler Murray (24), Justin Herbert (23), and promising youngsters Mac Jones (23), Trevor Lawrence (22), Zach Wilson (22), and Justin Fields (22), are all on the roster (22).
With all of this baby-faced potential, NFL Today anchor James Brown of CBS asked the show’s resident quarterbacks, Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason, who they thought would be the greatest NFL passer in five years.
Simms selected Mahomes with a bow to Jackson. Esiason responded with a quarterback who plays for the same team he did for a decade:
I’m going with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. I say that because he had to recover from a devastating knee injury. He used the opportunity to ensure that he was prepared for the next year. In the summer, he also worked on his arm strength with his own quarterback coach, Jordan Palmer. What does it imply to you? That shows me he’s concerned, which is the most crucial factor.

While it has no influence on the future of any of these young quarterbacks, Esiason’s claim was bolstered by anecdotal evidence from Week 7.
During a 27-3 Titans win, Mahomes struggled as the Titans prevented him from leading at least one touchdown drive for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, in a head-to-head showdown with Jackson’s Ravens, Burrow stunned them 41-17, passing for 416 yards and three touchdowns.
Could Burrow match Esiason’s 1988 campaign?
Then-Bengals quarterback Norman “Boomer” Esiason recorded 17 touchdowns during the first seven games of the 1988 season, much as Burrow has through Week 7 in 2021.
Burrow has passed for 15 more yards than Esiason did at the same time in 1988, and they have the same amount of interceptions (eight). The Bengals of Boomer were 6-1 against Burrow’s 5-2.
Esiason passed for 3,572 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions at the conclusion of the season. The squad finished the season with a 12-4 record as a result of this effort. It also won the 27-year-old quarterback a Pro Bowl berth, an All-Pro selection, and the NFL MVP Award.
After entering the playoffs and defeating the (then-AFC) Seattle Seahawks and the up-and-coming Buffalo Bills to go to the Super Bowl, Esiason’s Bengals were defeated by Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers, the “Team of the ’80s.”
The ’88 and ’21 teams featured numerous notable player parallels in addition to Burrow and Esiason. Both teams feature a powerful, dynamic running back (Ickey Woods/Joe Mixon), a good young receiver (Eddie Brown/Ja’Marr Chase), and a solid defense that is devoid of big names.
It may be too early to make the ’88/’21 analogies, but given what Burrow and the Bengals have accomplished thus far this season, one thing is certain: hope.
