The NFL has been under fire for its handling of domestic violence cases. For the first time, it is considering a policy that would suspend players who are accused of domestic violence for six games.
The take relationship to the next level meaning is a term that is used in sports. It means to take your relationship with someone to a different level, and it can be anything from talking about your feelings or going on a date.
Much of the tension between Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley, co-stars of Inside the NBA, is made-for-TV drama (after all, TNT knows drama). However, there are instances when the beefing becomes more personal. This advantage is most apparent when O’Neal brings up his championship ring tally, as he always does.
Barkley is remembered as one of the best NBA players who never won a title when he retired in 2000. During his 19-year career, O’Neal won the NBA Finals four times and was named NBA Finals MVP three times. It’s a glaring omission on Barkley’s résumé, and it’s a sore place O’Neal isn’t afraid to rub salt into now and again.

Charles Barkley’s 16-year NBA career spanned the same time period as Shaquille O’Neal’s 19-year run, from 1992 to 2000. During the regular season, the two Hall of Famers faced 15 times, with O’Neal’s team (either the Orlando Magic or the Los Angeles Lakers) winning 8–7 against Barkley, who played for both the Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets at the time.
In the playoffs, the two only met once, with Shaq’s Lakers winning four games in the first round of the 1999 Western Conference. The Rockets’ short-lived superteam of Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, and Charles Barkley came to an end in that series. After the series, Drexler retired, and Pippen joined the Portland Trail Blazers, holding a long-standing grudge towards Barkley.
The rivalry to a head early in Barkley’s last season. After Barkley threw the ball at O’Neal’s head during a November 1999 game in Houston, the two stars fought. Ejections After that, neither player watched the game finish, and the issue was resolved via mediation, as is customary in young leagues. The moms of the players get involved.
Return to the set of Inside the NBA in 2011 for a reunion.
Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley’s verbal sparring continues.
The sparring bouts between Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley on the set of TNT’s legendary NBA program might be edited into a feature-length film. Whether it’s for show or because they really disagree so often, O’Neal and Barkley are usually on opposing sides of the debate.
And, as they say on social media, #rangzzzzz is O’Neal’s trump card most of the time. Shaq has four, whereas Barkley has none, and the big guy isn’t afraid to tell the somewhat smaller man about it.
O’Neal stated why the championship tally is his go-to weapon of choice during an interview on Conan O’Brien’s Conan Needs a Friend podcast in March 2021.
“Charles is a fantastic player, one of the top 50 all-time, but he doesn’t understand what it takes to go to the next level, which is why I tell him, ‘You’re over here shouting and screaming, thinking your word is the law, but no, you didn’t get to the mountain top.’ I was not only on top of the mountain, but I was also the king of the mountain.”
That is correct. You can Google it, as O’Neal tells Barkley on occasion.
O’Neal and Barkley are good friends.
In the end, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal are excellent friends, at least off-camera. Much of their banter is lighthearted, and it seems like nothing pleases either of them more than a good jab at the other.
Barkley makes fun of O’Neal’s dating game. Because Chuck resembles an extraterrestrial, Shaq professes to believe in UFOs. It goes on and on.
Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley may serve as a wonderful object lesson in these divided times we live in. Disagreeing without getting irritable is still possible.
