With Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the Chiefs are one of the most exciting teams in the NFL. For the past two seasons, the Chiefs have run an offense that features quarterback Travis Kelce, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce, running back Kareem Hunt, and wide receiver Sammy Watkins. The offense has been so successful that it has led to Kansas City making it to the AFC title game both seasons. But this year, it looks like the offense will look different.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense was 1st-and-10 at the Denver Broncos’ 40-yard line with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter and the ball on the Denver 1-yard line. On the play, the Chiefs had a: Heavy tight end: Travis Kelce (6’5, 260 lbs). The Chiefs did not want to use Kelce as a blocker, and did not; instead, they used him as a decoy. This was a smart play.
There was a time when the Kansas City Chiefs were the kings of the NFL. Between 1970 and 1985, the Chiefs won 14 division titles, three conference championships and three Super Bowls. Unfortunately, those days seem so long ago, as the Chiefs have lost the last five to the rival Raiders.
During the Super Bowl in February, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sprinted for his life, but he doesn’t appear to believe pass protection will be a problem this season. In fact, Mahomes is astounded by how fast the team’s offensive line has gelled and the camaraderie they’ve shown throughout the preseason.
Stronger trench performances may mean the difference between Mahomes and the Chiefs winning their second Lombardi Trophy in three years or falling short of another championship in Super Bowl LVI.
This offseason, the Chiefs overhauled their offensive line.
After seeing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ front seven chase his star quarterback all over the field, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was not going to be complacent. He went out and bought some much-needed protection for Patrick Mahomes.
In free agency, Kansas City signed veteran guard Joe Thuney and enticed Kyle Long out of retirement. Long has been out since the beginning of the summer due to a knee ailment. Fortunately for Mahomes, Veach’s movements were not the only ones he made.
In return for two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Orlando Brown Jr., the Chiefs traded four draft choices to the Baltimore Ravens, including their first-round pick in 2021. The 25-year-old was named to the Pro Bowl at tackle and became the focal point of the Chiefs’ overhauled offensive line.
Kansas City benefitted from the knowledge that certain players, like as 2020 third-round selection Lucas Niang, will be back this fall. In April, Veach selected Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith in the 2021 NFL Draft, giving him a pair of starters.
Mahomes isn’t oblivious to the offensive line’s progress. In fact, he’s well aware of how good the defense has been throughout the preseason.
Patrick Mahomes complimented the offensive line on several occasions, saying it had surprised him.
For the most of the preseason, Mahomes has remained upright. He admitted it himself.
Following the team’s preseason victory against the Minnesota Vikings this past weekend, the former MVP spoke at length about the offensive line’s outstanding efforts. Every week, he claimed, the unit had improved.
According to John Dillon of Chiefs Wire, Mahomes stated Saturday, “I believe they’ve had a great preseason.” “I haven’t been struck too much, and I don’t believe I was touched today. That, I believe, speaks to them and the way they’ve been playing. They’ve done a fantastic job and have improved each week, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
As the season progresses, Mahomes also hinted that things would only become scarier for opposition defenses.
According to Chiefs Wire, Mahomes stated, “When you sort of gel as an offensive line, with the quarterback, with the whole offense, when everyone is on the same exact page, that’s when you get those really great offensive lines and great offenses.” “I think you see us as the games go; we’re communicating more and better, and I believe we’ll keep improving throughout the season.”
Beyond performance, the Chiefs quarterback is pleased with the connection that has formed among the offensive line players. He told NBC Sports’ Peter King that he was surprised by how fast everyone had gelled.
Things are starting to fall into place for Kansas City’s franchise quarterback, who seems to recognize that the new-look offensive line is crucial to the team’s chances of winning Super Bowl LVI next February.
Will the team’s preseason success carry over into the regular season?

Preseason is an essential part of the long road to the start of a new NFL season, but it pales in contrast to the weight of expectation that hangs over every play in Week 1. If the pigs can’t transfer their preseason performance to the regular season, Mahomes’ endorsement of the offensive line will be meaningless.
The Chiefs have the wonderful fortune of having a quarterback who is a generational talent. Despite being pursued for an eternity, Mahomes still managed to make some extraordinary passes at the Super Bowl, and he did it on turf toe. This is a former MVP who has the best combination of arm skill, anticipation, and escapability in NFL history. At the skill positions, he also possesses top weaponry.
If the offensive line allows the 25-year-old to produce plays on a regular basis, Kansas City is almost certain to contend for Super Bowl LVI. Mahomes will have the chance to put up huge numbers and help the Chiefs win another Lombardi Trophy, based on his effusive admiration of the new-look team.
