The Patriots have been the most successful franchise in the NFL for over a decade, winning five Super Bowls and ten AFC Championships. Despite their success, they were forced to fire head coach Bill Belichick last season after he led them to a record-breaking sixth championship in his 16th year with the team.

It’s no secret that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s relationship has deteriorated over time. Given the size of their egos and the amount of time they spend working together, this shouldn’t have come as a surprise. However, Brady and Robert Kraft’s decision to replace perhaps the greatest coach in NFL history should come as a shock.
And, based on the events in Houston, Texans supporters should be enraged at the extent to which the New England Patriots were able to destroy their beloved team.

Nobody in the NFL expects more from his players than the guy who took over in Foxborough in 2000. However, just though Belichick’s no-nonsense, business-like approach succeeded, it didn’t come without a cost to his squad. Brady, in particular, became dissatisfied with his working environment, and he made sure to inform the guy who signed his paychecks.
Kraft welcomed the notion of moving away from Belichick, with his star quarterback appearing eager to play for a new head coach. According to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham, the Patriots’ power couple intended to return to Foxborough with a familiar face: Bill O’Brien.
Obviously, the plan never materialized. However, when you look at the facts, it’s obvious that Texans supporters should be angry with Brady, Kraft, and O’Brien.
Houstonians should be enraged by the consequences of what happened in New England.

It’s one thing to perform a bad job. It’s one thing to place your team in a position to fail on purpose.
That is precisely why people who support the Texans should be enraged.
According to Wickersham, O’Brien attempted to fire himself so that he could return to work for the Patriots. The only issue? Belichick’s contract was extended by Houston, and New England did not move on from him.
Wickersham says, “The idea seemed fantastical, but O’Brien heard about it.” According to the Houston Chronicle, he was in a power struggle of his own in Houston, battling general manager Rick Smith in a “dysfunctional” and “toxic” environment. The leaks from O’Brien’s team saying he wanted leave were suspiciously pushy, as if he knew he had a golden parachute. However, the [Texans] selected O’Brien over Smith in the end, giving him greater influence over football operations. Later, O’Brien remarked to a friend that it was a hollow triumph. He said, ‘I was hoping to be fired.’

Unfortunately for Texans supporters, O’Brien’s ill-advised personnel choices and dubious coaching methods caused their team to totally disintegrate. During his tenure, he oversaw the humiliatingly awful DeAndre Hopkins deal, which makes perfect sense if you’re wanting to lose your job. It also includes mismanaging Jadeveon Clowney and not quickly signing Laremy Tunsil to a contract extension after surrendering a large haul for him. Also, keep in mind that Houston signed Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million deal in 2016 – a move that failed on all fronts.
These changes created a lot of uncertainty and didn’t help the Texans improve as a team. They seemed to be totally at odds with any Super Bowl plan, but now that we know O’Brien wanted to be fired and Brady and Kraft intended to appoint him as Belichick’s successor, everything begins to make sense. It seems that he undermined his own achievement in order to pave the way for a return to New England. However, O’Brien effectively destroyed a brand and his image for little reward in the end.
Needless to say, Texans fans have suffered as a result of their previous head coach’s egregious choices.
Is there hope for Bill Belichick and the Patriots?
Belichick, ironically, outlasted Brady, and O’Brien no longer works in the NFL. Regardless, it’s clear that the GOAT made the correct choice to leave Foxborough. While the Buccaneers seem to be capable of winning back-to-back championships, the Patriots’ roster does not appear to be championship-caliber.
Despite spending almost $160 million in guaranteed money on free agents, Belichick hasn’t gotten anything in return. Through three games, New England’s retooled front seven has failed to live up to expectations, and the secondary hasn’t fared much better.
Meanwhile, an offense that has gotten a boost in skill at tight end and receiver is still evolving. The Patriots will continue to struggle to move the ball and generate touchdowns until the offensive line begins protecting rookie quarterback Mac Jones with any regularity.
Is it possible for Belichick to right the ship before it’s too late? If there’s one coach who’s shown he can get the most out of his players’ abilities, it’s him.
But, at this point, it’s reasonable to wonder whether a 69-year-old Bill Belichick still possesses the secret sauce that propelled him to victory from 2001 through 2019.
However, it’s possible that Tom Brady was the deciding factor in the end.
