The Basics of Tennis Scoring

Unlike other sports, tennis scoring can be a bit confusing for newcomers. But once you understand the basics, it’s actually quite simple. Here’s a quick rundown of how points are scored in tennis:

  • Each player starts with 0 points. The first player to score 4 points wins the game.
  • Points are scored by winning rallies. A rally is a sequence of hits in which the players take turns hitting the ball.
  • The player who hits the ball into the opponent’s court wins the rally and scores a point.
  • If the player who hits the ball into the opponent’s court fails to make it back to their own side of the court, they lose the rally and the point.
  • The first player to win 4 points wins the game. However, if the score reaches 4-4, the players must keep playing until one player has a two-point lead (e.g., 6-4, 7-5). This is called a “tiebreaker.”

Tips for Keeping Track of the Score

Now that you know the basics of tennis scoring, here are a few tips to help you keep track of the score during a match:

1. Use a scorecard. Most tennis matches are played using a scorecard, which is a sheet of paper that keeps track of the score. If you’re playing a match, be sure to ask your opponent if they have a scorecard. If not, you can easily find them at your local tennis club or online.

2. Keep track of the server. In tennis, players take turns serving the ball. The player who is serving is the only one who can score points on their serve. When keep track of the score, be sure to note who is serving so you know when the points are being scored.

3. Watch the scoreboard. If you’re playing a match at a tennis club or tournament, there will likely be a scoreboard that shows the score. Be sure to check the scoreboard often so you know what the score is.

4. Use a tennis app. There are many great tennis apps that can help you keep track of the score. Some of our favorites include Tennis Scoreboard Pro and Tennis Tracker.

5. Keep track of the games. In tennis, the first player to win 4 games wins the match. Be sure to keep track of the number of games each player has won so you know when the match is over.

Why is tennis scoring the way it is

The scoring system in tennis is designed to produce a winner in a reasonable amount of time. The scoring system is also designed so that the player who is serving can’t just keep serving and winning games that way. By awarding points to the player who wins rallies, the scoring system encourages players to be more aggressive and make more shots.

There are two main ways to score in tennis:

  1. Counting points: In tennis, points are usually only awarded to the person serving. When the server wins a point, they score a ‘point’. If the receiver wins the point, they become the new server and score a ‘point’.
  2. Games and sets: In tennis, games and sets are usually only used in professional matches. A game is won when one player has won four points. A set is won when one player has won six games and their opponent has only won four. If the score reaches six games all, then a tie-break is played to decide the winner.
