‘You Know It’s on When That Thing is On’

Many people see football as a game of strategy and teamwork. It’s true that these skills can’t be mastered overnight, but the team at Tactical Outsiders found one player who has them down pat: Emmitt Smith. These days it often takes more than talent to make it in professional sports, but this former college star is still playing with some legendary teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills despite his age (he’ll turn 45 next month). Sports fans are lucky enough to watch him on Sundays while he still looks young…

“You Know It’s on When That Thing is On” is a meme that has been around for a while. The meme usually features an image of a person looking at their phone and the text “you know it’s on when that thing is on.”

Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback, has to be excellent in the cold, and he is. He recently spoke with Pat McAfee about his performance when the temperature lowers and revealed why he throws so effectively in bad weather. He also explained to supporters how to tell the difference between “normal” cold at game time and “that cold.”

Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback in the cold.

“I like it here in Green Bay being a cold-weather quarterback. I get a small smile in my eye as the weather changes and the leaves start to fall off the trees because I know football season is about to begin.”

Some quarterbacks in the NFL are good in cold weather, while others aren’t. It’s even conceivable, as Tom Brady recently revealed, to stop being a cold-weather quarterback after relocating from Massachusetts to Florida.

Aaron Rodgers is a quarterback who thrives in the cold.

The average temperature in Green Bay, Wisconsin during football season is slightly above freezing at 33.3 degrees. According to Climate-Data.org, the average temperature dips to 11.5 degrees during the NFL playoffs in January.

Lambeau Field isn’t known as the “Frozen Tundra” for nothing.

Fortunately for Packers supporters, Rodgers has a better track record than most quarterbacks when the weather outside turns sour.

Rodgers activates it when the temperature drops below freezing. According to Spectrum 1 News, he had a 28-6 record in these circumstances heading into last year’s playoffs. In these games, he’s thrown 76 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions, for an average passer rating of 108.3. The Pack wins these matchups by an average of 15.5 points per game.

Rodgers lost a 28-degree shootout against Brady and the Buccaneers in the 2020 NFC Championship Game, but he still had a solid game. In the 31-26 defeat, he went 33-of-48 for 346 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

Rodgers discussed his cold-weather success and how to tell when he’s genuinely experiencing it.

Aaron Rodgers addressed being a cold-weather quarterback with veteran NFL punter Pat McAfee on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, as he does every week. Rodgers initially revealed why he donned long sleeves against the Seattle Seahawks last week.

When the game-time temperature is below 50 degrees, the California native has “some severe restrictions” regarding wearing long sleeves. He claimed the temperature was 36 degrees at game time on Sunday, so long sleeves were required.

He also feels that his large hands, or “giant ham hocks,” as McAfee referred to them, are one of the secrets to his success in cold weather. Rodgers stated that “throwing in the cold requires huge hands,” and that it’s frequently the rain and wind, not the temperature or the snow, that make cold-weather games difficult to negotiate.

The temperature for the Seahawks game “wasn’t that chilly,” Rodgers also told McAfee. When he feels it’s so chilly, he indicated how fans would know:

It’s really chilly when the temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. And if I’m wearing my turtleneck, you’ll know if I’m chilly. I wasn’t wearing it, but when that thing is on, you know it’s on.

On playing in the cold, Aaron Rodgers said

Rodgers won’t get another opportunity to wear his turtleneck and crush the competition with his large hands for a few weeks.

When the Green Bay Packers take on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, will it be cold?

The Green Bay Packers will take on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The temperature will be 36 degrees Fahrenheit, but not below freezing, and it will be wet. The weather will have no effect on the game since U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, is an enclosed site.

However, the matchup poses some difficulties for Rodgers and the Packers.

The Vikings are coming off a tremendous victory over the Los Angeles Chargers that improved their record to 4-5 and placed them in the thick of the NFL postseason race, only a half-game behind the 5-5 Carolina Panthers in seventh place.

Justin Jefferson, the Vikings’ dangerous wideout who just made history by passing for 2,000 yards in only 24 career games, had a breakthrough day against the Chargers. He had a season-high nine receptions for 145 yards, matching for the most in the league.

The Packers’ defense has allowed the fewest throwing yards (2,027) this season, but a hot Jefferson might change that. At the very least, it might require Rodgers to step up further more following his rusty-yet-effective 292 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception performance last week against the Seattle Seahawks.

However, Rodgers’ next chance to improve his cold-weather record may come in Week 12, when Green Bay hosts the warm-weather Los Angeles Rams in Wisconsin. Weekend temperatures are expected to be in the low-to-mid 30s, according to the long-range prediction.
