Boxing how to punch

There is a science to punching correctly, which if you follow will make your punches more effective and less likely to get you hurt. When you first start boxing you will be throwing wild haymakers that do nothing but flail your arms around and tire you out. While this may look flashy, it is completely ineffective and will not score you any points in a fight. In order to punch correctly, you need to understand how to properly transfer energy from your legs, through your core, and into your fist.

  • The first thing you need to do when throwing a punch is to get your feet into the proper position. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart with your back foot turned at a 45-degree angle. This will give you a solid base to work from and help you transfer energy more efficiently.
  • Once you have your feet in the proper position, you need to start the punch by rotating your hips. As you rotate your hips, your shoulders will follow, and finally, your arm will snap out to deliver the punch. It is important to note that you should never lead with your chin when throwing a punch. This will leave you open to getting hit and could seriously hurt you.
  • As you deliver the punch, you want to make sure that your wrist is in line with your forearm. This will help ensure that you are punching with the proper technique and not putting too much stress on your wrist.
